Mardi Gras Gourd

Create your own colorful Mardi Gras Gourd. You will learn how to make your own flower and tentacles out of colored reed followed by a curly rim. Start with feathering on the background color and then apply bright color layers of wax to make this a fun and whimsical gourd.

• Student needs to bring an apron.
• Teacher will supply prepped gourds, wax melting tools, colored reed, gloves, tapestry needles, sinew, feet and more.
Gourd Bowl with Leather Braided Rim

Finish the rim of a small gourd bowl with real leather for an attractive simple design that won’t compete with your gourd’s art

• Student must bring needle nose pliers if you have them.

Seagrass Basket

Students will learn to do seagrass coiling to finish the rim and wrap the handle of a gourd bowl with seagrass.

• Student Please bring an apron and needle nose pliers if you have them.
• Teacher will supply a prepared gourd (cut, sanded and drilled), seagrass, needle, inks and dyes to color the gourd (if desired) beads and feathers for embellishment, tools and written tutorial.
Beaded Gourd Bowl (A)

You will paint, burn and bead a gourd and leave with this attractive gourd bowl.

• Student needs to bring: Ink or dyes, wood burner (must have tear drop shape, the cheap ones at craft store usually have it) also a tip for line work. Acrylic paint for inside. Size 6 seed beads (I used 3 different colors), 20 gauge copper or silver wire, paper towels, and a spray for finish.
• Teacher will provide a cut, sanded and holes pre-drilled gourd, pencils, water bowl, wire cutters, and applicator for dyes.

Iris Beauty – Part 1
Time: Thursday 6/20 8 am to 12 pm

In this class, students will learn how to transfer a design to their gourd and apply alcohol inks with assorted sponges to achieve a lovely mottled background. They will wood burn their design and then learn how to use transparent inks, oil pastels, and/or watercolor pencils to color the iris. If they do not plan to take Part II in the afternoon, they will ‘cure’ the inks/watercolors and apply the glaze/sealer.

• Student should bring an adjustable-temperature wood burner with a script/writing tip and a heat gun (not a hair drier). Students should also bring an apron or smock to protect their clothing, as the alcohol inks and oil pastels can stain fabric.
• Teacher will provide cleaned and sanded kettle gourd, tutorial with photo of finished project, Press n’ Seal, scissors, permanent pen, alcohol inks (various colors), transparent inks, watercolor pencils, oil pastels, pattern, brushes, water basins, paper towels, foam plates, vinyl gloves, sponges, glaze/sealer, etc. There will also be ONE heat gun available for student use (in case someone doesn’t have one).


Iris Beauty – Part 2
Time: Thursday 6/20 1 pm to 5 pm

In this class, students will learn how to carve an area surrounding the design work they completed in the Part I class. They will create a stipple effect with their ball burrs and will learn how to clean up any carving and/or wood burning errors. They will then color the carved area to eliminate any discoloration of the gourd and will ‘cure’ the paint and apply the glaze/sealer.

• Student needs to bring the gourd from Part I class, an adjustable-temperature wood burner with a script/writing tip, a rotary tool (e.g., Dremel) with an inverted cone burr and small and medium ball burrs, and a respirator/dust mask. Students must also bring a heat gun (not a hair drier) and an apron or smock to protect their clothing.
• Teacher will supply a tutorial with photo of finished project, brushes, water basins, paper towels, foam plates, glaze/sealer, etc. There will also be ONE heat gun available for student use (in case someone doesn’t have one).

Basket Weaving Techniques on a Gourd Bowl
Time: Thursday 6/20 1 pm to 8 pm (1 hr break for dinner)

Limited to 12 participants

This class will cover different weaving techniques as we create a one of a kind wall vase. We will start with a twelve inch canteen gourd, cut, cleaned, and drilled ready for weaving. Using multi-color spaced dyed reed with optional glass crow beads, we will weave six to eight inches and finish with a simple rim. A wall mount will be attached to the back for hanging. An optional hand wrought iron stand will be available for purchase at an additional $25.00.

• Student needs to bring basket scissors or pruners, bucket, towel, and sponge.
• Teacher will supply a gourd, reed, seagrass, and glass crow beads.

**For those who choose to bring their own gourd, it must be a thick gourd that has been cut in half, cleaned inside and out. The one pictured here is a canteen gourd.


THURSDAY AFTERNOON CLASSES

Chipmunk Pyrography

Learn to burn realistic fur of a chipmunk and his surroundings in this class. All levels welcome.

• Student should bring (a) Variable temperature pyrography tool with a shader and a lining pen. Detailed recommendations available upon request (jragourd@ptd.net) and (b) a cleaned, whole kettle shaped gourd, about 6-8 inches high/wide.
• Teacher will provide detailed instruction, handout and pattern materials.

Clay Head with Face for Gourd (A)

Ever wanted to make a Santa Claus, Witch or Old Lady/Man Gourd, but didn’t know how or where to get a good face for it? Come learn with me how to make an old person’s clay face on a head to attach to a gourd. The finish head will be about 2 inches tall with a stick to attach to a gourd.

• Students need to bring an apron, Exacto knife with a #11 blade, any clay tools you may have, but teacher has some to share.
• Teacher will supply the clay, basic clay tools, armature for head, face color chalks, pens to paint the eyes and 3 baking ovens. (Teacher will need to know what color face people want to make: Beige or Brown. email Beth at bethcraver@verizon.net with your choice.)

Kumihimo Fun for Everyone

Students will learn how to create a Kumihimo braided cord using a Kumiloom. Each student will receive a Kumihimo kit, fibers, and several precut gourd pieces to use as pendants. The teacher will demonstrate how to add beads to your braids, attach braids to gourds and how to attach jewelry findings to the end of your braids.

• Students need to bring scissors, flexible tape measure, and pencil.
• Teacher will supply Kumihimo kits, fibers, gourd pieces, and all tools.

Folk Design Bird House
Time: Thursday 6/20 1 pm to 4 pm

Students will learn how to create a simple birdhouse with a folk art motif. Basic cutting, cleaning, wood-burning, and ink finishing will be taught.

One-Stroke Painting of an Iris on a Gourd

Snowman Gourd
Time: Thursday 6/20 1 pm to 4 pm

• Student needs to bring: Birdhouse gourd sanded (for snow man) Acrylic paints, opaque white and colors of your choice for clothing and gift boxes, thick snow paint (Aleene’s) palette knife or plastic knife. Brushes, water holder, paper towels. Fleece of your color for hat and fringe, scissors. 3 buttons, spray for finish

• Teacher will provide Patterns, pencils, tracing paper, hair dryer, brushes but you may have ones you like better. A ¼” flat brush and a liner brush at least, shimmer. Glue gun and glue.

THURSDAY EVENING CLASSES

Waves – Wheat Weaving on Gourd Bowl
Time: Thurs 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm

Learn to prepare wheat for weaving and how to tie straws together for plaiting. Learn the compass plait and how to make straw pillows to embellish a prepared gourd.

• Student must bring a prepared gourd bowl (dyed & varnished) - ready for embellishment. NOTE: The cut rim of the gourd will not be covered, so make certain that the cut edge is neat and dyed to match the inside of the gourd. Drill 2 small holes 1/2" down from cut edge, about 1/4" apart. Repeat these pairs of holes every 4-5 inches around the gourd.
• Teacher will supply wheat to clean, prepared (soaked) wheat, sinew for tying straws together.

Beaded Gourd Ornament (A)
Time: Thurs 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm

Look closely; these are actually gourds. Learn to create this beautiful and unique ornament using beads, needle and thread. Kit includes all materials needed to complete one ornament.

• Students should bring eyewear to see fine, detailed work, i.e. proper magnification to thread a needle, and embroidery type scissors.
• Teacher will supply a kit: Kit: includes painted or stained gourd with eye screw, wire for hook, primary and accent size 11º seed beads, needle and thread, written directions with illustrations, and bead surface.

Gourds and Roses

Apoxie Sculpt Air Dry clay will be used to make hand formed roses to put on a large egg gourd. Students will learn how to make roses, leaves, and vines and how to attach them to a gourd. Students will learn the many techniques for coloring your clay before, during or after you have made your clay flowers. The teacher will also discuss how students can use Apoxie Sculpt to build gourd sculptures and even use Apoxie Sculpt to reinforce and repair broken gourds.

Celtic Butterfly – Pyrography Mastery
Time: Friday 6/21 8 am to 5 pm (1 hr break for lunch)

Learn advanced techniques in this full day intensive class. We will start the morning with designing and burning the Celtic knot border by hand, then the butterfly in the afternoon. For the intermediate to advanced pyrographer.

• Students should bring a good quality pyrography tool is a must for this class. Bring all of the tips you have, a shading pen is essential AND a cleaned kettle shaped gourd that is light in color and smooth. Size should be about 10” tall.
• Teacher will supply detailed instructions, handouts, and pattern.
Clay Head with Face for Gourd (B)

Asian Bowl with Washi Paper Collage

Wandering Vines of Copper
Time: Friday 6/21 8 am to 12 noon

In this class, students will learn how to add metallic accents to a base-coated gourd using Perfect Pearls. The Pearls will be ‘cured’ with the use of water and a heat gun. Then they will learn about the unique properties of Quik Copper ™ and how to free-sculpt vines and leaves, adding details with the 5-in-1 Clay Tools. When the Quik Copper has hardened, they will highlight the sculpting with Rub n’ Buff ™ and/or guilders’ paste. They will then apply a glaze/sealer.

• Students must bring a heat gun (not a hair drier) and an apron or smock to protect their clothing.
• Teacher will supply The instructor will provide: a cleaned/cut/sanded/base-coated gourd vase, tutorial with photo of finished project, Perfect Pearl Powders, mini-mister, brushes, water basins, paper towels, foam plates, glycerin-based hand cream, Quik Copper, 5-in-1 Clay Tools, Rub n’ Buff and/or gilders’ paste, glaze/sealer, etc. There will also be ONE heat gun available for student use (in case someone doesn’t have one).

Ikebana Flower Arranger

Participants will hand chip a repetitive pattern to enhance a canteen. There will be a variety of options to color the gourd (inks, dyes, gilder’s paste, or viva products). Add a flower insert and you are ready for flower arranging.

• Students should bring a ¼ inch U shape gouge. Because the gouge will be very sharp, it is best to use a fish filleting mesh glove or a leather one to protect the other hand if the tool slips.
• Teacher will provide a canteen gourd, coloring options and a flower insert.

Sun Meets Sky Necklace
Time: Friday 6/21 8 am to 4 pm (1 hr break for lunch)

Create your very own “Sun meets Sky” necklace. Take a circle shard and turn it into a work of art to be worn. Start by sponging your background and then applying your bright colored wax design. Using black agate stone beads you will be taught how to put them onto a gourd piece and apply the finish. In class we will also discuss how to complete earrings. At the end of class you will have a completed necklace ready to wear.

• Students should bring an apron and be prepared to have fun.
• Teacher will provide circle shard, acrylic paint, Melting Pot and #0 Wax Design Tool (or #1), Crayola crayons, cotton balls, black beads, needles, suede lacing, stone embellishment, various tools, glue and varnish.

Knotless Netting with Kokopelli

Night Sky – Wheat Weaving Embellishments
Time: Friday 6/21 1 pm – 4 pm

Participants will learn how to split straws, put straws in the placement rings, tie straws together into stars, trim stars and make straw glitter.

• Students should bring a prepared gourd (cut, cleaned, dyed and varnished – ready for embellishment). The cut rim of the gourd will not be covered, so the edge should be neat and colored to match the interior of the gourd. Keep in mind the straw star looks better on a dark colored gourd.
• Teacher will provide wheat straw to make the stars, glitter, glue, and sinew and students will use teacher’s straw star placement rings and straw splitter.
  Gourding 101 (A)
Time: Friday 6/21 1 pm to 5 pm

Students will learn about gourds and get hands on experience from cleaning to cutting and a variety of decorative techniques that can be used on gourds. You will be able to use paints, dyes, inks, pyrography and finishes.

Petroglyph Bowl with Suede Lace Rim
Time: Friday 6/21 1 pm to 5 pm

Students will create a petroglyph motif on a gourd using frisket paper and textured paint. The rim will be finished with a simple sewn suede lace.

Hummingbird Filigree
Time: Friday 6/21 1 pm to 5 pm

In this class students will burn the hummingbird design and then use a rotary tool (ie., Dremel) and various cutting burs to carve away the background, followed by carving the filigree. You will finish off the bird and flowers by coloring with inks.

• Students need to bring a wood burner and a rotary tool such as Dremel® (NOT battery operated), proper collets and cutting burs (small, medium & large ball burrs and grinding stones). A dust mask is a MUST. Teacher will have single temp hobby type wood burners to borrow if you do not have a wood burner.
• Teacher will supply a cut and cleaned gourd, pattern inks, dyes, and finishes, applicators and tools for application. Teacher will also have some burrs and collets for borrowing/sale.

Dream Catcher

Three Celtic Pendants

Swirling Ornaments
Time: Saturday 6/22 8 am to12 pm

It is never too late to think about Christmas. In this class we will make twelve small ornaments. Using Adirondack Inks, we will stamp, smear, and blend colors to create swirling ornaments. To make them “pop” we will seal them with either a triple glaze or snow frosting. Add a cap and a hook and they are ready to hang. This is just a fun class.

  Gourding 101 (B)

Gourd Pocketbook
Time: Saturday 6/22 8:30 am to 4 pm

In this full-day class you will wood burn a design on the surface of the gourd and stain it. You will then line the inside of the gourd with patterned tissue paper. The real fun begins with learning how to put together to make a gourd pocketbook.

• Students should bring a leather strap for handle, Mod Podge, tissue with pattern for lining, scissors, 1 inch stiff brush, ink or dye (flower and pocketbook color), wood burner (must have tear drop can use cheap one from craft store, usually has this) straight line bit, hair dryer, large piece of leather for hinge (see picture) , paper towels.
• Teacher will supply a cut and sanded gourd, leather punch, drill, Chicago screws, tape, pencils, water bowl, cording, screwdriver, wet wipes. beads, needle and thread, written directions with illustrations, and bead surface.

Rain Drum

This gourd drum will be a multi-tonal drum that is perfect for your garden…for a lovely sound when it rains. Using thick gourd tops or small gourds we will create small open drums, decorate with pyrography or inks (or both), and use metal to create the drum head. Our gourd drum will be placed on a base and be ready for placement in your garden.

• Student needs to bring a *wood-burner and your favorite tips, sharp scissors and a mask.
• Teacher will provide all other supplies needed, including but not limited to: gourds, metal sheets, wooden bases, dyes, glues & wood putty. *Teacher will have some hobby-style wood burner for you to borrow if needed.

  Gourding 101 (C )
Time: Saturday 6/22 1 pm to 5 pm

Students will learn about gourds and get hands on experience from cleaning to cutting and a variety of decorative techniques that can be used on gourds. You will be able to use paints, dyes, inks, pyrography and finishes.

• Student to bring a wood burner, if you have one
• Teacher will supply a variety of paints, dyes, and other materials

Pine Needle Coiling
Time: Saturday 6/22 1 pm to 4 pm
Instructor: Esther Smucker
Level: Beginner
Cost: $35
Limited to 10 participants

Students will dye a gourd bowl with ink dyes, then coil the rim with pine needles, and finish it off with a natural embellishment.

• Student needs to bring an apron and sharp scissors.
• Teacher will supply the ready to craft gourd, long leaf pine needles, waxed linen and other materials needed to complete the gourd bowl in class.
